Abstract
Day trips are trending. However, a large amount of emissions is generated due to traffic during arrival and departure. In order to formulate measures for a more climate-friendly arrival and departure in day tourism in rural destinations, which focus on nature tourism, the mobility behaviour of nature-oriented day tourists in Bad Harzburg was analyzed through a standardized survey. Of the 335 surveyed tourists, nearly 80% traveled by car. The car was mainly used for longer travel distances. Public transportation was primarily used in connection with ticket discounts. The choice of transportation was also independent of age – younger day tourists did not significantly use more climate-friendly arrival and departure options, although their general willingness to do so was higher. Digital tools were used by the majority of day tourists regardless of their choice of transportation. From the results, the following key measures for a shift in transportation in nature-based day tourism with regard to arrival and departure to rural destinations like Bad Harzburg were derived: (1) Increasing attractiveness of public transportation and developing intermodal everyday-tourism-integrating concepts, (2) Expansion of electromobility and car-sharing, (3) integration of more climate-friendly arrival and departure options with digital applications and transparent information policy.
