    The groundwork of Putin’s war

    Every ideology aims at constructing specific representations of reality that many people can easily adopt. In this paper, mental models described as cognitive representations of reality are used to explain how people come to their beliefs. Applying Johnson-Laird’s theoretical concept, I present mental models reconstructed by means of a qualitative analysis of key lexemes in the Crimean speech of Vladimir Putin held in 2014. This reconstruction reveals how the mental models in question target a shared social cognition among listeners using ideologically loaded references articulated in the speech. Furthermore, tracing ideological references allows a preliminary insight into how the speaker aims to affect the discourse formation process of the time. This reconstruction is indispensable to gain a better understanding of the Russian attack on Ukraine, eight years later.

    SpEakWise VR: exploring the use of social virtual reality in telecollaborative foreign language learning between learners of English and German

    This paper discusses the potential of immersing foreign language learners in Social Virtual Reality (SVR) in an international seminar, designed by the authors, called SpEakWise VR, combining the tandem language learning paradigm with gamification in immersive virtual environments. SpEakWise VR builds on an existing telecollaboration (SpEakWise) between undergraduate students in Trinity College Dublin and Hildesheim University. We set out to explore how inclusion of an SVR activity influences student engagement, learning involving intercultural and multilingual problem solving, and team building. This paper presents initial observations from our research, concerning multimodality in embodied immersion and code-switching, and proposes future avenues of inquiry.

    Vermittlung sprachlichen Handelns mit Literaturarbeit im DaF/DaZ Unterricht
    Dieser Artikel gibt einen ersten Einblick, wie die Funktionale Pragmatik im Zusammenhang mit literarischen Texten als Lehransatz am Beispiel für den DaF/DaZ-Unterricht genutzt werden kann. Die Funktionale Pragmatik ist von Konrad Ehlich und Jochen Rehbein zur Analyse des sprachlichen Handelns begründet worden und hält vielerlei Möglichkeiten zur vorteilhaften Nutzung im (deutschen) Fremdsprachenunterricht bereit. Am Beispiel des Dramas „Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder“ von Bertolt Brecht werden in diesem Artikel einige dieser Möglichkeiten aufgezeigt, sowie das Warum zur Anwendung der Funktionalen Pragmatik im (deutschen) Fremdsprachenunterricht dargelegt.

    Functional Pragmatics and Pedagogy of the Oppressed
    This paper outlines the similarities between Paulo Freire’s ideas on the Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the research results on the Functional Pragmatics by Konrad Ehlich and Jochen Rehbein. It will also examine how both theories are related, connected with each other, what meaning they have for and on teaching, and how its results can be therefore positively used together to get the maximum chances for improving and transforming our teaching. This paper proposes one particular way to do so and gives insights into another perspective on teaching.
