Publication PhDThesisOpen access Acquiring spelling skills for foreign words(Stiftung Universität Hildesheim, 2013) ;Paxa, Anne-Marie ;Bredel, UrsulaUniversität HildesheimIn the past, virtually nothing was known about how pupils acquired spelling skills for foreign words. This may well be surprising, given the fact that the acquisition of orthographic competence has been the subject of an increasing amount of empirical research over the past 20 years. The fact that no separate attention has been given to foreign words points out a grave imbalance in conventional research into how spelling is learned. That research does not distinguish between divergent orthographic patterns and thus does not differentiate between native and foreign words in the teaching of spelling competence. Assuming that the rules for the correct spelling of native and foreign words differ substantially, and further assuming that learning how to spell is in fact learning about a system, this paper will undertake an empirical examination of the factors that influence success when learning how to spell foreign words correctly. The results of the study show clearly that the pedagogy of orthography has to address the writing of foreign words as a distinct and separate domain. Of particular significance is the finding that especially those pupils who are strong in spelling increasingly internalize and automate native spelling practices and then transfer them to the spelling of foreign words; this may be of central importance for the models used to teach spelling. In addition, new paths for spelling pedagogy are suggested by the awareness that acquiring spelling skills for foreign words presumes stable orthographic competence in one’s own native language, but that these skills need to be augmented in the classroom by teaching specific patterns governing the spelling of foreign words. Also of significance is the insight that native and foreign words follow differing spelling patterns, making it necessary to deal with them not simultaneously in the learning processes, but successively instead.145 235 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access Active citizenship in foundations which support culture. A survey of developments of cultural policy in the non-profit sector(Stiftung Universität Hildesheim, 2014) ;Punke-Dresen, Anna ;Schneider, WolfgangUniversität HildesheimThe committee enquiry "Culture in Germany" of the German Bundestag revealed a paradigm shift in its final report of 2007: Both the privately operated cultural aid and active citizenship are gaining importance within the cultural sector. Cultural work would not be possible and affordable without the dedication of churches and active citizenship. Thus the roles of the government and the public sector are newly adjusted. The biggest cultural financier is the citizen, both as a market participant and as a donor, but also as a taxpayer. Due to shortened households, commitment in terms of time, money and empathy is indispensable to supplement government funding. Furthermore, by improving the legal framework for charitable benefit, active citizenship was considerably strengthened. In the course of debates on financing culture, the role of civil society is an inherent part, and the search of alternative financing options gets more and more important. The research project examined in this context depends on if and how foundations can contribute to a greater use of active citizenship in support of culture. With the help of 17 expert interviews will be determined, whether the order of the cultural promotion of foundations can be better met by using active citizenship. The scientific study will find out how foundations can contribute to a relevant cultural policy for the civil society. It will ask how and through which resources foundations are supporting the current cultural promoting and moreover, the role that active citizenship plays in this context will be explored in depth. Finally, it will look for perspectives to find way active citizenship can strengthen cultural policy and further develop the concept of culture. As part of the qualitative content analysis according to Philipp Mayring, seven specific forms of active citizenship have emerged as examples in the context of the foundation's activities, which will be illuminated in detail. The research also notes that individuals or groups of people contribute to lasting active citizenship by building a cultural foundation or a sub-foundation. Therefore foundations are a meaningful opportunity for participation in cultural life, and are an expression of a self-confident civil society. However, the analysis of the interviews also shows that causal connections between the integration and support of active citizenship on one hand, and the promotion of culture on the other, are difficult to prove with the surveyed foundations, and therefore it is difficult to measure in terms of an impact. As a further result of the interviews it will be worked out that monetary and ideational commitment should ideally complement each other, and that volunteering cannot be the only resource for cultural promotion. Nine recommendations at the end of the thesis show thought-provoking impulses for development prospects of active citizenship in foundations, which support culture. And more importantly, future research requirements are identified that offers further motivation required in continuing the research subject of this thesis.61 152 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access Adaptivität von hypermedialen Lernsystemen(Stiftung Universität Hildesheim, 2006)Kamentz, ElisabethThis thesis presents a user modeling approach which views culture-bound user characteristics as a crucial factor of the design of adaptive hypermedia learning systems. Several dimensions of culture defined by cultural anthropologists are examined as well as the cultural variables in intellectual styles and discourse structures, and the effects of cultural value orientations on GUI design conventions. This analysis is extended to the field of didactics - based on the assumption that the culturally specific edu-cational environment affects the learning style of an individual and therefore the acceptance and effec-tiveness of educational software. This culture oriented adaptation strategy is put in concrete terms by first applying two research meth-ods: the evaluation of educational software from different cultures in the areas of layout and multime-dia, interaction and navigation, content presentation and didactics, and a questioning of target audience members on their learning styles. The purpose of the evaluation is to investigate culturally specific design principles. In the case study described in this thesis the characteristics of British and German systems are compared. The questioning aims at deepening the results of the evaluation by performing a cross-cultural learning style analysis. With the learning style inventory being part of the adaptive system an even more precise way of determining the individual learning style of the user is provided. According to the results of this preliminary study culture and learning style based profiles of system design features are constructed. The central idea of this personalization strategy is to determine which elements of an existing e-learning application can be reused and which need to be modified when adapting the system to the characteristics of users from a chosen target culture. This includes the de-sign of variations, and if required the development of new elements. The design profiles are supposed to serve as patterns for the construction of stereotypes. The assignment of stereotypes to an individual user forms a starting-point for the adaptation process. This process continues by updating the user model on the basis of the monitoring of the navigational path and a questioning whether the user agrees with the adaptation the system is about to perform. In addition to the definition of design profiles a culture oriented set of adaptive methods and techniques of content presentation and navigational support has to be assembled. The user modeling approach is being examined in usability tests with users from Great Britain and Ireland. The results show acceptance of the tested learning system which is seen as a confirmation of the adaptation strategy employed. They indicate a dominance of discourse principles over the values described by the dimensions of culture which already has been detected in the context of the evalua-tion. The testing also shows that discourse norms not only influence user preferences in the area of content presentation but also have an impact on expectations concerning navigation and didactics. These findings point out the necessity of an adaptation approach which goes beyond a conventional localization strategy.33 135 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access Affektive Räume der Aufführung bei Jürgen Kruse und Bruno Beltrão(Universitätsverlag Hildesheim; Georg Olms Verlag, 2024) ;Wagner-Lippok, Frithwin ;Roselt, Jens ;Fachbereich 2, Universität HildesheimMatzke, AnnemarieTheatre performances are physical and sensual spaces of experience. Their scientific research must draw on subjective impressions. If it is confined to objective facts, it misses the theatrical event just as much as in the arbitrary representation of personal reminiscences. What a performance is for us becomes apparent when we seek out the affective momenta that set the flow of experience in motion in the first place. The material is not what is visible, but what comes up against us physically. Two theatre performances by Jürgen Kruse and two dance pieces by the Brazilian choreographer Bruno Beltrão are used to develop a theory of affect that turns its self-entanglement into a method in its descriptive language and thus "in the tension between precision and indeterminacy", as Carl Hegemann writes in the epilogue, brings to light the disconcertingly contradictory and beautiful aspects of these performances.126 191 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access Analyse und Vorhersage von Qualitätseigenschaften in Software-Produktlinien(2021); ;Universität Hildesheim ;Schmid, KlausBerger, ThorstenContext: Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) enables the cost-effective development of similar software systems while also increasing their quality. This is realized by the introduction of variability management to support a high customizability to satisfy the individual customer needs. But the introduction of variability management has the drawback that it increases the complexity, as developers must consider interactions of components of various product variants. The product line research community developed new analysis methods to support the quality assurance of product lines, e.g., variability-aware code metrics. These metrics aim at avoiding accidental complexity and at the identification of error-prone code early during development. However, our previous systematic literature review revealed that very little work was done to research the suitability of variability-aware metrics to draw any qualitative conclusions on software product lines. Objective: This work investigates the use of variability-aware code metrics for the quality improvement of software product lines. This includes whether empirical studies can be utilized to derive coding guidelines for the proactive avoidance of complexity and related errors. The focus of this work is on analyzing whether the studied metrics can be used to identify error-prone code. This covers univariate analysis methods as well as the application of machine learning algorithms. We also investigate whether variability-aware metrics offer any benefits compared to established metrics from the single system domain. Method: We present an empirical study of 692 single system and variability-aware code metrics on the Linux kernel. First, we analyze the correlation between measures of these metrics to compilation errors and vulnerabilities, which were discovered after committing the code, or even after the release. Afterwards, these metrics are grouped into metric clusters according to the measured attributes. These clusters are analyzed with four classification approaches of the machine learning domain, in order to assess the usefulness of the various measurable code attributes. Results and Conclusion: Even though the analyses demonstrate a statistical significance for the majority of the investigated metrics, we show that univariate analysis methods are unsuitable in practice. This is related to the strong class imbalance of only 1.5% defect code functions (compilation errors), and 0.4% vulnerable code functions respectively. Using only a single metric in a threshold-based analysis results in F1 scores below 0.073. Although related studies imply the derivation of coding guidelines to avoid accidental complexity based on comparable results, we came to the conclusion that this is not possible due to the lack of alternative implementations. Nevertheless, variability-aware metrics offer a high benefit for quality assurance, as we show that these metrics can successfully be used to identify error-prone code. Particularly suitable for this task are metrics, that do not only consider the variability of the measured code artifact, but also of other artifacts that are, through variability, connected to the measured artifact. By applying the Random Forest classifier we achieve an F1-score of 0.667 (compilation errors) and 0.711 (vulnerabilities).53 167 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access Anerkennung in multiprofessionellen Teams(Universitätsverlag Hildesheim, 2021) ;Schäfer, Anja ;Universität Hildesheim ;Soellner, RenateGraßhoff, GuntherMulti-professional team constellations can result in special challenges for the professional participants. To meet these challenges and to enable decent multi-professional cooperation, recognition is often named as a basic requirement. However, recognition as a condition for successful cooperation and collaboration requires further specification. Based on recognition theory approaches, a multidimensionality of recognition relationships can be assumed. Not only the recognition of colleagues from other professions and therefore the level of cooperation (micro level) seems to be important, but also recognition given by the organisation (meso level) and by society (macro level) can cause imbalances between professions. This study therefore examines the question of how recognition is organised at the different levels and whether recognition relationships are based on occupational group-specific differences. For this purpose, a quantitative-empirical study is carried out, in which the professional participants in the field of educational assistance are asked to give their assessments of multi-professional cooperation and recognition relationships. The evaluations show that there are differences between the professional groups of social workers and psychologists. Psychologists rate both meso level and macro level recognition significantly higher. On the micro level there are no occupational group-specific differences: educators, social workers and psychologists feel equally recognised. The analyses of the influencing factors indicate that individual and organisational framework conditions are also relevant, as these can cause differences in the perception of recognition.534 692 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access Aus dem Blickwinkel der Jüngsten(2025); ;Greve, Prof. Dr. Werner ;Fachbereich 1, Universität Hildesheim ;Greve, Prof. Dr. WernerMähler, Prof. Dr. ClaudiaSince the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in March 2009, inclusion has been legally binding in Germany. Although 15 years have passed since then, the implementation of inclusion in the German education system is progressing slowly. In search of successful conditions for the implementation of inclusion, attitudes come into focus: due to their guiding influence, attitudes are attributed a special role regarding the successful implementation of inclusion. So far, attitudes of students have been hardly considered, and there is currently no suitable instrument measuring their attitudes regarding inclusion. Building on the results of Pernot (2018), a questionnaire was developed with the aim of capturing the attitudes of fourth graders towards various facets of inclusion. The statistical validation was carried out initially based on a sample of N = 895 students from 37 primary schools in Lower Saxony. The questionnaire was then revised and statistically revalidated based on a sample of N = 515 students. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed a five-factor structure, which includes the factors of accommodation (self- and other-related), (social) evaluation anxiety, heterogeneity, and heterogeneity-related fears. It has been possible to construct a questionnaire that captures children's attitudes towards inclusive practices and classroom heterogeneity, taking into account both other-related and self-related aspects. At the same time, in both studies, potential influencing factors (empathy, self-efficacy expectations, contact experiences, learning and performance goal orientation, classroom climate) on inclusion-related attitudes were examined based on structural equation modeling. The results are discussed and practical implications are derived.126 115 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
...102 198 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access Automated Machine Learning - Bayesian Optimization, Meta-Learning & Applications(2018) ;Wistuba, Martin ;Schmidt-Thieme, LarsUniversität HildesheimAutomating machine learning by providing techniques that autonomously find the best algorithm, hyperparameter configuration and preprocessing is helpful for both researchers and practitioners. Therefore, it is not surprising that automated machine learning has become a very interesting field of research. Bayesian optimization has proven to be a very successful tool for automated machine learning. In the first part of the thesis we present different approaches to improve Bayesian optimization by means of transfer learning. We present three different ways of considering meta-knowledge in Bayesian optimization, i.e. search space pruning, initialization and transfer surrogate models. Finally, we present a general framework for Bayesian optimization combined with meta-learning and conduct a comparison among existing work on two different meta-data sets. A conclusion is that in particular the meta-target driven approaches provide better results. Choosing algorithm configurations based on the improvement on the meta-knowledge combined with the expected improvement yields best results. The second part of this thesis is more application-oriented. Bayesian optimization is applied to large data sets and used as a tool to participate in machine learning challenges. We compare its autonomous performance and its performance in combination with a human expert. At two ECML-PKDD Discovery Challenges, we are able to show that automated machine learning outperforms human machine learning experts. Finally, we present an approach that automates the process of creating an ensemble of several layers, different algorithms and hyperparameter configurations. These kinds of ensembles are jokingly called Frankenstein ensembles and proved their benefit on versatile data sets in many machine learning challenges. We compare our approach Automatic Frankensteining with the current state of the art for automated machine learning on 80 different data sets and can show that it outperforms them on the majority using the same training time. Furthermore, we compare Automatic Frankensteining on a large-scale data set to more than 3,500 machine learning expert teams and are able to outperform more than 3,000 of them within 12 CPU hours.56 190 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access Außerschulische Jugendbildung in der Rainbow-Nation - Aspekte von Citizenship Education im Südafrika der Post-Apartheid(2015) ;Schultheiß, Almut ;Georgi, Viola ;Universität Hildesheim ;Georgi, ViolaSchubert, VolkerTwenty-one years ago, South Africa finally abolished its inhuman system of Apartheid, which was based on strict racial segregation and discriminating inequality amongst population groups. The country opened up for the first national elections for each South African inhabitant of age entitled to vote. Hence, proceedings as a sovereign, democratic and prosperous state, envisioning a non-racist and non-sexist society as desired in the South African Constitution are underway. Nevertheless, South Africa still faces many hindrances on its way to create a societal democratic model where diversity is valued, accepted, and embraced as a positive potential, and not considered as a threat. Many committed South Africans coming from civil society, business and government, are keen to proceed with no lack of thoroughly compiled ideas and programs. Especially regarding young people, as their part of population is extremely high, a broad variety of concepts exist. The challenge comes with implementation. This thesis would like to contribute to the discussion around Citizenship Education in South Africa. In the South African context, it offers an innovative intervention, called Managing Diversity Youth Event, for and with young people aiming at triggering Open-Mindedness and making ready for Active Citizenry. It also looks at whether at all young people are willing to being faced with others from heterogenic background. To evaluate the intervention, quantitative and qualitative researches have been conducted since 2010 to obtain valuable findings that can contribute to assess, adapt, and improve the Event concept. At the beginning of 2009 a diverse panel of socially engaged South Africans presented the so-called “Dinokeng Scenarios”. In a nutshell, the panel has offered three courses of events to South Africans to choose from when imaging Year 2020: Walk Apart, Walk Behind, and Walk Together. According to the panel, “Walking Together” offers the most promising opportunities towards a transparent, fully operational, and sustainable democracy. If “Walking together” is the way to go, the dialogue and exchange with and among people of heterogenic background need to be realized and promoted. A network of committed South African youth organizations implemented the Managing Diversity Youth Events BOPHA SIYAKHONA 2010 AND BEYOND, SHEBA BOKAMOSO 2012, and SHEBA BOKAMOSO 2014 with about 250 participants of heterogenic background, most of them young women and men aged between 13 and 22 years from different South African provinces. Participants were exposed to others by being mixed into newly created soccer teams and workshop groups. Regardless of the specific assessment of Managing Diversity Youth Events, South Africa’s diversity needs to be addressed in the one or other way. Since the specific South African setting as a “Rainbow Nation” is pure fact. Many more ideas and concepts are welcome, and are supposed to be wholeheartedly championed for earnest realization.32 131 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication PhDThesisOpen access BARK - Zur Selbst-Positionierung in der (Tanz-)Vermittlungspraxis(2025-05-27); ;Reinwand-Weiss, Vanessa-Isabelle ;Eger, Nana AdrianeReinwand-Weiss, Vanessa-IsabelleThis research work is about a differentiated scientific view of a dance education practice according to the ways of thinking and acting of Anna Halprin and the role of qualitative dance education in the framework of cultural education. Special attention is given to uncertainties and their impact on educational processes just like the role of somatic movement practice, communication and valuation. The basis for this research work is a dancing project and it's method of education with young adults performed by two students taught by a student of Anna Halprin. Data was collected during and after the project. The main focus was on the uncertainties expressed by the dancers and the reflection in retrospect. Narrative interviews were carried out and subjected to analysis according to narrative analysis and the grounded theory. The basis for the development of four aspects (BARK) were the expressed uncertainties and reflections. These aspects are encounter, act, reflect/awareness and communicate. These are significant aspects in the work of education. This offers the opportunity to position oneself in one's own education practice by dealing with them. The education of Anna Halprin is being processed in this research work and is focussed on its artistic and educational teaching aspect. Therefore it is useful for a contemporary dance education in the German-speaking countries. This research work makes a contribution to increase the visibility of dance education in an academic context and breaks down education practice per se and the experiences of the dancers in particular.56 141
